Media & Cultural Analysis Gender, Representation and Advertising Essay
Media & Cultural Analysis Gender, Representation and Advertising Images - Essay Example It has been noted that males are generally attracted to advertisements that are related with fast cars or fancy cigars or costly liquors, whereas females are attracted to advertisements that deal with decorating houses and make up kits among others. Therefore, the ad-makers before designing an advertisement campaign thoroughly judge the targeted gender and develop the advertisement accordingly. Thus, the objective of the paper would be to discuss the aspect that gender is performative while designing advertisements. Furthermore, the techniques used by the media firms and their way of organising the socio-cultural elements will be demonstrated. Moreover, the strengths and the weaknesses of semiotics used to convey message through visual meanings will also be critically analysed. Semiotics is the signs that are used to convey messages to the viewers. Advertisements play an imperative role in promotional activities. Therefore, the two examples of print media that will be discussed below will show how it appeals to the different genders. Theoretical Understanding of Media Forms and Genres According to Kress (1998), genre is a kind of text that is derived from a structure of a social occasion and characteristics and their purposes. It can further be said that genre may be considered as a realistic device which is used to help any gathering to produce efficiently and over and over again and to relate them to the customersââ¬â¢ expectations (Chandler, 2000). This aspect can be interpreted from an example of advertising image below: Source: (Mikeââ¬â¢s Computer Marketing, 2004). From the image above, it can be interpreted that as the genre used in the advertisement of Jupiter Auto Spa, which depicts the unique offerings and discounts, may attract the male more than the female. Free car wash and other discounts will make the male feel that they are getting added value for the price they are paying. Moreover, the free service of pickup and delivery of the car will play on the mind of the male that will be a convenient factor (Mikeââ¬â¢s Computer Marketing, 2004). The male genders usually are busy in working due to which the care towards their vehicle is being neglected. Thus, the added facility may encourage the male as their time is not spent uselessly whereas the desired task is done effectively. This print advertisement is expected to attract less to the women as they are more concerned about products that take care of their physical beauty and fitness. The discounts and the offerings will somewhat be attractive to women who have craze towards cars. As stated by Judith Butler (1995), desires are often intentional which are towards a given object or other, but at the same time it is also reflexive where it is a modality in which the subject is both improved and discovered. Thus, desire is the relationship between the image and the viewer, between object of desire and desiring matter, between product and customer. Therefore, in the above mentioned print advertisement the desire of the female genders towards the product is comparatively low than the male ones (Butler, 2011). Though the product is a part of luxury category, the added value and convenience offered to the customers will help the male genders to get attracted towards the service of Jupiter Auto Spa. According to Dines and Humez (2003), ââ¬Å"

The Meaning of Sovereignty, and Its Extent in Contemporary Essay
The Meaning of Sovereignty, and Its Extent in Contemporary Nation-States. Sovereignty in the Asia-Pacific Region - Essay Example The 21st century saw some 200 independent states in the international community, the largest number of free states in history (Tsoundarou, 2002). The key factor for a state to be adjudged independent is its ability to effectively exercise its sovereignty unimpeded by external or internal forces. The concept of sovereignty is generally known by all as the ultimate power for self-determination in a free state. It is oftentimes equated with liberty or freedom. There is general agreement as to its description: sovereignty is absolute, limitless, indefeasible, inalienable, and indivisible (Underhill, 1808); it is qualitative or categorical, not quantitative and therefore not capable of description in percentage terms (Weber, 2011). Ideally, sovereignty resides in the people, although the government exercises the sovereign act in their name. Recently, however, developments in international relations have made it necessary to alter our concept of sovereignty, in order to create workable str uctures among nations that better address the imperatives of globalization and international cooperation. This essay posits the argument that the largely inwardly-looking concept of sovereignty being pursued by states in the Asia-Pacific region has acted as a constraint on the development of a strong regional union that would better serve their interests in a globalizing world. The predominant Westphalian sovereignty to which the Asia-Pacific nations cling is largely antithetical to the ââ¬Å"poolingâ⬠of sovereignty that is a requisite to regional unification. In this regard, the Asia-Pacific region is not prepared to meet the imperatives of globalisation. The Meaning of Sovereignty The word ââ¬Å"sovereigntyâ⬠has been used in so many ways that a degree of ambiguity surrounds the determination of its meaning. In fact, there have been some authors who categorically state that sovereignty is impossible to define (Uruena, 2006). To illustrate the complexity of sovereignty as a concept, a taxonomy by Stephen Krasner (1999, in Weber, 2011, p. 3; Cohan, 1995, pp.912-916; and Jackson, 2006, pp. 63-64) identified four different usages: (1) Domestic sovereignty, that pertains to the power structure of state political authority, as well as the degree to which control is effected and imposed by this authority; (2) Interdependent sovereignty, pertaining to the degree by which the political authority is able to effect the entry and egress through its borders; (3) International legal sovereignty, that pertains to the recognition accorded to other states and which other states accord it; and (4) Westphalian sovereignty, that traditional form of sovereignty which excludes all foreign elements from its political processes. The general perception of ââ¬Å"sovereigntyâ⬠is that central power reserved by common consensus of nation states for the political head of that state. This began with the Treaty of Westphalia of 1648, otherwise known as the ââ¬Å"Peace Treaty between the Holy Roman Emperor and the King of France and their respective Allies.â⬠Composed of 128 clauses, the document was originally meant to contain the minute details marking the conclusion of the Thirty Years War. It includes the return of landholdings to the different feudal lords, with the promise not to interfere in the regime being implemented in territories other than their own. In effect, the power of the emperor founded on the ââ¬Å"claim of holy predominance was passed on to the kings and lords who exercise their own local predominanceâ⬠(Jackson, 2006, p. 62). This notion of the absolute right of the sovereign was eventually taken to be the ââ¬Å"

Due to non controlling of oil prices in this way might be Airline industry suffered loss by $ 3 billion (IATA) New arrival of airlines companies with low cost.. Modern online ticketing system can be hack by hackers and can be crashed by virus so in this way database of the company will destroy and eventually company will suffer huge amount of losses. The natural crises and deserters in the region like earthquake, flooding and hurricane. The quickly increase of fresh sensitive unprocurable diseases like as SARS and Bird Flue that have very bad impact on airline industry sale. Current situation of Emirates Airline: Any new arrival or entry in any industry is considered unattractive due to very low demand, high prices and strong competition. But attractive for Emirates Airlines due to its good strategy and strong market position. Also, it has many opportunities to handle any uncertain situation because it is member of very strong Emirates Group which share its resources and reduce the company expenses. Overall, Emirates enjoying with great market position along with high profitability rate which is considered as competitive advantage of the company and high profit rate of the company of its best competing strategy and other expansion strategy. Conclusion and Recommendation At the time of strong competition which refers to maturity stage of Airline Industry so each company should approach offensive and use the offensive strategy after in detail review its internal and external environment and all related factors which directly effect the company position. The following recommendations are for Emirates airlines. Operational cost of Emirates is very high only due to huge investments on technologies, aircrafts and best quality services. Emirates should control its cost and should decrease its cost through improvement and development of operations activities .Emirates should improve maintenance process, effective and efficient flight schedule of the company and better utilization of the company resources like aircrafts etc. Another way for reduction of cost is advancement in its technologies by investment in technologies and in this way cut of labour cost. For example it is strongly recommended to new installation of self check service system on all airports. In reply to the threat of low cost airlines in UAE market. Emirates should offer advance level services and control cost and this way no need to reduce the prices and in this order it should introduce its new brand as subsidiary which should be base on low cost. a subsidiary Extension in routes strongly recommended and should be special growth in tourism UAE. In this order to it should extend its route worldwide most attractive areas and Canada one of them. Joining with global alliance will help to increase its worldwide destinations in this way should offer more impressive and effective strategy for competing low cost airlines. Advancement in Information Technology is most important for progress of emirates airlines and in this order it should make contracts with E-Business Company for improving its services and increase the customers satisfactions. E-CRM is the latest technology and adopted by Emirates this strategy since increasing in numbers of the internet users and this way out for keep long term relation with customers. (Jiang, 2003). Eventually, Emirates Airlines make comprehensive analysis and review of company internal and external factors and its competitors and should develop new strategies for staying and keep good position in airline industry at this maturity time.

Culture of Ancient Rome :: Ancient World Culture
The art and artifacts from the Karanis excavation provide a useful, summary statement about the culture of ROME, the great imperial city. Rome's greatness grew out of its imperial program of conquering others and establishing colonies. This military expansion at once brought great material benefit to the Roman state and guaranteed a pipeline of wealth for Rome, the imperial city. And Rome becomes a cosmopolitan capital where high-living and material wealth become synonymous with personal importance and success. Note how the Karanis exhibit displays extravagant wall paintings, which did not decorate the walls of churches or temples but rather the homes of wealthy citizens. The exhibit also includes coins, whose minting bespeaks the abiding concern for the tokens of wealth as well. What the Romans also did was learn from other cultures. You might wonder why APHRODITE, a Greek goddess, was memorialized in a fantastic sculpture in Roman times (and in Egypt, no less!). To their credit, the Romans recognized the richness of Greek art and architecture, and they sought to emulate the Greek masters -- and the Greek styles and themes -- in their own art. To a large degree, it was the Romans who brought Greek (and Hellenistic) culture to world attention. Romans patronized Greek artists and artisans in the glorification of a vast world of their own, Roman creation. It is no surprise, then, that the Roman poet VIRGIL (or VERGIL) turns to Greek mythology and to the Greek epics as he fashions his own description of the origins and destiny of the Roman state, The Aeneid. Virgil writes his extended poem, in part, to win the favor of

The Necklace :: Character analysis, Loisel
In the short story ââ¬Å"The Necklaceâ⬠, the main character, Loisel, is a woman who dreams of greater things in her life. She is married to a poor clerk who tries his best to make her happy no matter what. In an attempt to try to bring happiness to his wife, he manages to get two invitations to a very classy ball, but even in light of this Loisel is still unhappy. Even when she gets a new dress she is still unhappy. This lasts until her husband suggests she borrows some jewelry from a friend, and upon doing so she is finally happy. Once the ball is over, and they reach home, Loisel has the horrible realization that she has lost the necklace, and after ten years of hard labor and suffering, they pay off debts incurred to get a replacement. The central idea of this story is how something small can have a life changing effect on our and others lifeââ¬â¢s. This idea is presented through internal and external conflicts, third person omniscient point of view, and the round-dynamic character of Loisel. The third person limited omniscient point-of-view is prevalent throughout this short story in the way that the author lets the reader only see into the main characterââ¬â¢s thoughts. Loisel is revealed to the reader as being unhappy with her life and wishing for fancier things. ââ¬Å"She suffered ceaselessly, feeling herself born for all the delicacies and all the luxuries.â⬠(de Maupassant 887) When her husband tries to fancy things up, ââ¬Å"she thought of dainty dinners, of shining silverware, of tapestry which peopled the wallsâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (de Maupassant 887) As the story goes on her point of view changes, as she ââ¬Å"now knew the horrible existence of the needy. She took her part, moreover all of a sudden, with heroism.â⬠(de Maupassant 891) Having the accountability to know that the ââ¬Å"dreadful debt must be paid.â⬠(de Maupassant 891 ) This point-of-view is used to help the reader gain more insight to how Loiselââ¬â¢s whole mindset is changed throughout her struggle to pay off their debts. Maupassant only reveals the thoughts and feelings of these this main character leaving all the others as flat characters. Loisel is a round-dynamic character in that Maupassant shows how she thought she was born in the wrong ââ¬Å"stationâ⬠. ââ¬Å"She dressed plainly because she could not dress well, but she was as unhappy as though she had really fallen from her proper station.
Immigration
Immigration is a really big topic that is being discussed by our president and all of our citizens which people have two different views on but,I believe, immigration is a great cause for the United States. Due, to the fact that the United States was built upon immigration from many other countries. I believe that it can create a lot of good if we keep allowing immigrants to become citizens to a certain extent and we should keep it regulated. Immigration has been a part of the United States for years now. According to U.S. Immigration Before 1965 (U.S. Immigration Before 1965),more than two million immigrants have entered the United States in the years of 1880 through 1920.This helped populate the U.S during its beginning years when it was trying to expand and grow as a country. The immigrants who came from other counties in that time came to find religious freedom and find a better life for their families. Our current president wants to build a wall to keep Immigrants out of the US. he does not want immigration to be apart of the US because he believes that they would take our jobs and he believes that most of the people who come to the united states from mexico are all of the felons or people who come to the US to break the US apart and kill people when in reality they all have the same believes that the first immigrants had who came to the US they are coming to the US to start over try and provide for there families and look out for their future kids. Other people in the US believe that they will just come to the US to take our jobs and our money that we can be making when Usually they take jobs that no one would ever take here in the US they take the jobs that most people in the us think is to hard like working in the fields and in factories and other jobs. They also get paid less than minimum wage for doing jobs that people should get paid more for because they are producing our for economy by creating jobs and our produce of fruit and vegetables or anything that is made in a farm is usually grow and picked by these people who are really hard working and are just trying to make a living for there family and themselves. Another reason i believe that immigration would be great for the US is because our economy can benefit greatly if we allow immigrants to become citizens they can generate about 832 billion dollars to our economy in the next ten years which would help the us greatly the US this can help create over 203,000 jobs a year which would help the economy out a lot it would give us more jobs and it would also help the US with the economy because more money would be generated after all those jobs are created. Most immigrants have wanted to come to the US to follow their dreams and do what they can to to support their family and give them a better future in life and just most of the immigrants who came over from mexico are coming from a place where the drug cartel is reigning over there city or state and they are trying to get away from the bad that comes along with it they are trying to stop there kids from getting kidnaped and sold for money those people who are trying to get away from that believe that the US can provide that for them and they believe that they can provide something for the economy too. I am a first generation and have watched my family struggle through all the hardship that they have come across due to the fact that they never had any help from the government when all they are trying to do is help the american government and provide for their kids. In the US there are so many people who are for the legalization of immigration. ââ¬Å"80% of americans surveyed said that they support the pathway to citizenshipâ⬠(Most Americans support the path to citizenship for illegal immigration) this shows that most people would allow immigrants to become citizens. If 80 % of the people are for it then why does the US not allow them to become citizens. ââ¬Å"72% of these who backed president Trump also support the issueâ⬠(Most Americans support the path to citizenship for illegal immigration) Its know that president trump doesn't want to allow immigrants to become citizens but most of his voters have spoken up saying they have no problem with it at all and would allow them to become citizens. Its scary to see that there is a lot of criminals and violence in this world and you as an american would not want that for your country. Yes, the mexican drug cartel has spilled over the us border according to the article (illegal Alien criminals should be removed from the country) and it is scary but not all mexican people are drug dealers or people from the cartel. ââ¬Å"They are families and workers, taking the jobs nobody else wants, staying out of trouble,â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (the realities about illegal immigrants in the united states) Most of the immigrants who came to the us came to help support their family in hopes to find a job to help get out of all the dangers in mexico. They left everything behind to risk it all for the american dream to have a good family and have enough money to better there kids futers and get them ready for life. I believe that if we still allow immigration to the United states it can benefit the US a lot im not saying fully legalized but if we monitor it a lot more and and only let a select few people migrate over to the US we wouldn't have to deal with some of the downfalls of the immigration like tax increasing and other things like crime rate going up in the united states because there are some people who are criminals but most of the people who come to the us don't come here for that reason they come to help there family witch i really emphasis because not all immigrants are bad.
